Behind the Scenes

Philippians 2:13

St. Paul said, "It is God who is at work in you, both to desire and to work for his good pleasure."

After David was anointed king and went back to the sheep, he went to help his older brothers. His brothers were supposed to be at war, but like the rest of the Israelite army, they were hiding in the barracks from a giant named Goliath. After David brought his brothers a home-cooked meal and asked them some questions, as little brothers do, he decided that enough was enough. An entire nation was terrified of the giant, but David accepted the challenge of fighting Goliath.

Despite pushback from others, David stood firm in his mission. He knew what he was up against. But he had been here before. In his work as a shepherd, he chased off lions and bears and killed them with his bare hands, so he was confident that God could help him defeat this giant. David's present-day job as a shepherd was much more than a menial job; it was the exact preparation he needed for a task he didn't know was coming.

Waiting is more than waiting; it is preparing. God is not a God of accidents. Even when you don't see it, you can trust that He is working behind the scenes in your life for his purposes and he can give us a great victory over the Goliaths of our time.

Questions to Ponder

  • Do you believe God is at work in you?

  • How has God worked behind the scenes in your life in the past?

  • Do you believe you can trust him?
