The Unshakable King

Psalm 93 (NIV)

1 The Lord reigns, he is robed in majesty;
    the Lord is robed in majesty and armed with strength;
    indeed, the world is established, firm and secure.
2 Your throne was established long ago;
    you are from all eternity.

3 The seas have lifted up, Lord,
    the seas have lifted up their voice;
    the seas have lifted up their pounding waves.
4 Mightier than the thunder of the great waters,
    mightier than the breakers of the sea—
    the Lord on high is mighty.

5 Your statutes, Lord, stand firm;
    holiness adorns your house
    for endless days.

As we come to the final devotion this week, we lift our eyes to a powerful truth that has been present all along.  “The Lord reigns…”. From the rainbow after the flood, to the commandments on the mountain, to the empty tomb and the ascension of Christ, every moment has pointed to one unchanging reality: God is King! Psalm 93 paints a beautiful picture of God’s sovereignty over all creation. The seas may roar, the floods may rise, the storms may rage, but none of it can compare to the power and stability of God’s throne.

When the floodwaters rose in Genesis, God remained in control and gave a promise in the symbol of a rainbow. When His voice thundered from the mountain in Deuteronomy as He gave Moses the Ten Commandments, His authority established the way of life for us all to follow. When sorrow filled the hearts of the disciples in John, Jesus assured them that joy was coming. When Christ ascended to Heaven in Luke, it confirmed that He reigns in glory. Psalm 93 declares He has always reigned and He always will.

In a world that is often changing and feels uncertain and fearful, Christians have a truth which anchors us. God will not be shaken and his rule will not be threatened. His promises do not fail. We have security in his promises. The rainbow may fade from the sky, storms may come and go, and seasons of sorrow may rise and fall, but God’s reign is constant. And because of this, we can trust Him completely. Even when life is overwhelming, we can trust that everything remains under God's control. He is King!
