Psalm 23:1

"The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want." (Psalm 23:1)

There's something deeply comforting about the image of a shepherd. In ancient times, shepherds didn't just watch their flocks from a distance. They lived with their sheep, knew each one by name, and would literally lay down their lives to protect them. When the psalmist says "the Lord is my shepherd," they're not talking about a distant authority figure checking in on us occasionally. They're describing an intimate, personal relationship where God is fully invested in our well-being.

We have a shepherd who knows us completely and cares for our every need. When we say "I shall not want," we're not saying we'll never face hardship or struggle. We're saying that our deepest and most human needs are already met in God's care. We needn’t worry about love, purpose, guidance, or belonging because our shepherd provides all of these to us when we walk beside him in faith.

So today, take a moment to sit with this image. What does it feel like to be known and cared for like that? What needs are you carrying right now that you might lay at the feet of your shepherd?
