Psalm 23:2
"He makes me lie down in green pastures; he leads me beside still waters." (Psalm 23:2)
We live in a culture that rewards hustle. Rest feels like laziness, and stillness feels like wasting time. I know this is true in my own life. In a world of constant demands and never-ending to-do lists, who has time to truly rest and unplug from all of life’s demands? An uninterrupted nap in a quiet, green pasture sounds divine! Making time for rest is an intentional choice. However, notice that the psalmist doesn't say we choose to lie down in green pastures. The psalmist uses the word “makes”, implying a directive from our shepherd.
During Lent, we're invited to slow down and examine our lives. We're called to rest in God's presence, not because we've earned it or because we've accomplished enough, but simply because we're God's beloved. The still waters are restorative. They're the kind of deep, quiet places where healing happens. In our world of constant noise and motion, finding those still waters becomes an act of faith and rebellion all at once.
This week, notice where you might be running on empty. What would it look like to let your shepherd lead you to stillness? Even fifteen minutes of genuine quiet and stillness, without distractions, can become a sacred space where you remember that you are deeply cared for.
