Who You Are Can Make a Difference

Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others as faithful stewards of God's grace in its various forms.

1 Peter 4:10

There is a story in Chicken Soup for the Soul that I have used many times in various situations. It seems the teacher wanted to recognize the importance of each student, their contributions in class and life. She decided to make ribbons which read "Who you are can make a difference." She told each student individually how he/she made a difference then gave them two ribbons. Their assignment was to find someone whom they believed made a difference and give them a ribbon. They then gave them the second ribbon to pass on to someone else.

One recipient was a young businessman. He was deeply moved by the gesture. He then gave his extra ribbon to his teenage son. He told his son he loved him and admired him. His son began to cry, hugged his dad and said “Thank you, Dad. I did not feel loved and wanted; I planned to commit suicide tonight.”

Do you think you can make a difference in someone's life? Who do you need to tell "who you are can make a difference?"

Does God make a difference in your life? Do you share that with others? Remember we are God's stewards on earth. Through our daily  living we can make a difference, especially for  those in need. Help us to remember Dr. King's statement "Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter."

Loving God, as stewards for you, help us show one another that who they are can make a difference. Help us to demonstrate your commandments daily. We especially try to help those in need and to let them know that who they are can make a difference. Give us that knowledge. Amen
